An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Additionally, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
