RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
