Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
